RESTORE, stickers, and Fine Motor Control go Hand-in-Hand

Jakylah Joyner, a COTA and one of our Clinical Success Directors, shows us how to work on fine motor control while playing RESTORE's Falling Fruit.

Tip 1: Use a latex glove and a sticker as your creative controller when playing the game.

Tip 2: Adjust the setting according to the needs of your resident.

Reach and grab the fruit out of the air and place it in the basket to work on those Fine Motor Skills.

Wash your ADL cares away using RESTORE and a loofah?

Suzi Fullam, a COTA and one of our Sr. Directors of Clinical Success shares how you can use stickers for washing and for ADLs with self-care.

Tip 1: Use a washcloth or a loofah as your creative RESTORE controller to simulate how your resident would wash themselves.

Tip 2: In addition to working on ADLs, you can also work on grip strength.

Use a washcloth, loofah or any other real life object to play RESTORE games that simulate any movement your resident might make related to self-care.

Helping residents climb to greater Activity Tolerance

Evince Edouard is one of RESTORE’s Clinical Success Directors and a proud COTA. Evince shows us how you can build Activity Tolerance while playing RESTORE games.

Tip 1: Upgrading or downgrading the activity is a great way to monitor Activity Tolerance.

Tip 2: RESTORE games can be played seated or standing, depending on the needs of your resident.

Adjust the settings of the Rock Climbing Ruins game to provide the just right fit for your resident in building Activity Tolerance.

Did someone Order Up a way to work on Attention to Task?

LJ Scheidecker, who was a RESTORE MVP before joining the team as one of our Clinical Success Directors, shares how he used RESTORE to work on Attention to Task, when he worked in the field.

Tip 1: Use Mouse Mode with your residents and walk them through the process.

Tip 2: Use the Help button on the side to show the list of items again

Order Up is a great way to work on Attention to Task because your residents will need to remember what items are on their list and pay attention to the items that are falling, to make sure they match the list.

McKnights: 8 social factors that lead to an early death in seniors

Hello RESTOREtribe,

When it comes to predicting longevity, we often focus on medical conditions such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes. However, a recent study by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that social factors can be just as important as medical conditions in determining how long we live.

Researchers ID 8 social factors that lead to early death in seniors

The eight social factors studied were poor neighborhood cleanliness, low perceived control over financial situation, meeting with children less than yearly, not working for pay, not active with children, not volunteering, feeling isolated, and being treated with less courtesy or respect.

Lead author Sachin J. Shah, MD, MPH, a physician-scientist at MGH and Harvard Medical School, notes that the study highlights the importance of social factors in our lives. “We often overemphasize the importance of medical conditions when thinking about longevity. This research demonstrates that our social lives are as important as medical conditions.”

The study has important implications for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and individuals themselves. Healthcare professionals should consider social factors when assessing the health and wellbeing of their patients, and policymakers should invest in programs and policies that support social engagement and community building. In conclusion, the study underscores the importance of social factors in determining how long we live.

RESTORE-Skills is an online platform that offers a wide range of interactive activities for older adults to engage in, including games, videos, and exercises that can help improve cognitive and physical abilities. In addition to promoting physical and cognitive health, RESTORE can also help combat social isolation. Older adults can connect with friends, family members, and other users to participate in group activities, challenge each other, and share experiences. This helps older adults stay connected and active, promoting better health outcomes and a higher quality of life.
