McKnights: 8 social factors that lead to an early death in seniors

Hello RESTOREtribe,

When it comes to predicting longevity, we often focus on medical conditions such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes. However, a recent study by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that social factors can be just as important as medical conditions in determining how long we live.

Researchers ID 8 social factors that lead to early death in seniors

The eight social factors studied were poor neighborhood cleanliness, low perceived control over financial situation, meeting with children less than yearly, not working for pay, not active with children, not volunteering, feeling isolated, and being treated with less courtesy or respect.

Lead author Sachin J. Shah, MD, MPH, a physician-scientist at MGH and Harvard Medical School, notes that the study highlights the importance of social factors in our lives. “We often overemphasize the importance of medical conditions when thinking about longevity. This research demonstrates that our social lives are as important as medical conditions.”

The study has important implications for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and individuals themselves. Healthcare professionals should consider social factors when assessing the health and wellbeing of their patients, and policymakers should invest in programs and policies that support social engagement and community building. In conclusion, the study underscores the importance of social factors in determining how long we live.

Reliant Rehabilitation: Mitigating Therapy Refusals

Hey RESTORE Tribe,

Meeting therapy goals not directly impacts our patient's quality of life and longevity, but is also an important factor in a facility's financial success, especially in today's industry.

In a 4-week, 5-facility case study, Reliant Rehabilitation team members improved therapy outcomes by mitigating 138 therapy refusals. Patients who initially refuse physical, occupational, or speech therapy sessions participated more often when engaged with RESTORE-Skills This led to greater payout success for the participating facilities.

Ocean Healthcare: Increasing Sustained Attention with RESTORE’s Gamification Platform

Hey RESTORE Tribe,

We want to introduce you to Carthel, who is a long-term resident at Hamilton Grove Rehabilitation. Carthel had several barriers to improved quality of life and participation in leisure activities which included; wandering, impaired recall, and a short attention span. He was agreeable to task initiation but only sustained attention for 1-2 minutes before becoming distracted and leaving the activity. The activity team members introduced RESTORE-Skills, as an alternative solution, to enhance Carthel's participation. Click the link below to see the outcome of Carthel's experience with RESTORE.

Arabella Healthcare: Increasing Social Interaction with RESTORE’s Gamification Platform

Hey RESTORE Tribe,

We had the pleasure of doing a Case Study with the team at Arabella Healthcare and their resident, Mike. Initially, Mike would decline participation in social activities outside of his room. His social isolation, along with being in a new environment, impacted his quality of life. That's when their Activity Director introduced Mike to the RESTORE-Skills gamification platform as a solution to engage Mike, using some of his favorite activities. Click the link below to read about the outcome of this case study.
